Many people hear the term “silt sock” or Filtrexx® SiltSoxx™ and wonder what exactly it is. Compost silt sock is a mesh tube which is filled with a specially ground wood compost blend. It is typically used for site perimeter erosion control to help stop sediments and pollutants from running offsite. Silt sock is quickly replacing silt fencing in many regions of the United States; especially in the Marcellus Shale gas regions of Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio, and West Virginia.

Here is a great example of installing 18″ compost filter sock or Filtrexx® SiltSoxx™.

Filtrexx® SiltSoxx™ or Compost Filter sock (CFS) has many benefits over silt fence. One of the primary benefits is its ability to stop sediments from migrating down site, while actually filtering the runoff water as it passes through the compost silt sock. Another added benefit of compost silt sock over silt fence is that there is no need to return to the site later for removal. Silt Sock can simply be sliced open and left to decompose in the natural environment. Finally, unlike silt fence, silt sock’s weight actually helps anchor it to the ground with the addition of stakes, therefore preventing seepage under the silt sock.
